Quilpie

Then we headed to Quilpie. Now Quilpie is a very large town of 650. Well it’s some time since we saw so many streets and houses. Not only that but in the very wide streets that greet you as you enter the town there are flowers!!!! Think it was Mildura when we last saw flowers. In fact all the streets in the town are at least a chain wide.

A gem of a museum here and a lot of interest in the fact Amy Johnston landed here and Quilpie is the ‘end of the line’ for the railway. It holds thousands of cattle in it’s sale yards as they come off the trucks from the outlying stations and are fed and watered then loaded onto trains.

We took a visit out and did the climb up Baldy Hill. Although it’s not very high it’s steep but well worth the effort. You get a 360 degree outlook from the rocky top.

Quilpie is one of those artesian bore towns where they don’t have hot water systems, instead they have cooling tanks to get cold water. The alter in the catholic church is made out of opal donated by an opal miner to show the importance of opal to the area. Keep you eye on the news about a large dinosaur find in the area too. They are hoping to score over the new site in Winton.

A really interesting town and well worth the stop to see the area and stock up on food
