Called into Pemberton to get my mail. Wish we had more time to look around towns like this. It is very hilly here and you would get plenty of exercise doing the shopping! This seems to be the start of the large timber towns. We came through large forest areas and the sides of the road were ablaze with wattles in bloom.
Then onto Walpole. Stayed here two nights and had a couple of great drives. One day we went to Circular Pool. Here the water goes round in circles within the pools and the whole system is a deep red with the tannin from the trees. The whole bay where we are staying also totally coloured and I can tell you it doesn’t make it look inviting at all. It was here we also walked down to the ‘Hilltop Giant Tingle Tree’ It was so big at the base that you could park a car in it. The tingle tree is an eucalypt that is basically hollow due to the work of termites. There are several varieties of it around here and they are enormous, growing to 80 metres and living for 400 years!
Day 2 we headed off to the Tree Top Walk. A great experience and well worth the entrance fee. It had rained earlier and just as we finished but you really do walk in the tree tops and get a fantastic view down to the ground. All adds to the realisation of just how big these trees are. We also did the short ‘Ancient Empire Boardwalk’ that lets you stand inside several trees and adds a further perspective to the whole thing.
The hardest thing is taking any decent pics the give the real feeling of size and stature. There doesn’t seem to be a way to show the depth from the sky walk either. You just have to experience it all.
